Now I think they need some sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>What prompted my decision was a tweet I saw just over a week ago. And others of a dictatorial bent.<\/p>\n<p>The man who put out the tweet is CEO of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rwtwales.org\">Radnorshire Wildlife Trust<\/a>. Registered as both <a href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/company\/02132736\">a company<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/charity-search\/-\/charity-details\/519021\">a charity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Trust is doing very well for itself. With net assets of \u00a32,196,206 in 2021, against \u00a31,899,611 the year before. And \u00a3288,436 in the bank (\u00a3147,097 in 2020).<\/p>\n<p>That was despite writing off a debt of \u00a310,296 owed by Radnorshire Wildlife Services Ltd. (In all my years of blogging I have encountered few successful &#8216;trading arms&#8217;. Strikes me as a step backwards.<\/p>\n<p>Wildlife Trusts Wales maintains the pretence of independence with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtwales.org\">a website of its own<\/a>. (Look top left.) Though the contact address is now in Nottinghamshire.<\/p>\n<p>Then, perhaps to confuse things further, <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/charity-search\/-\/charity-details\/1045167\/governance\">the charity, Wildlife Trusts Wales Ltd<\/a>, seems to be ploughing on, yet the company <a href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/company\/03032775\">dissolved itself in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1lGltph7XviGl0m3Ml1u6QxwMdV6NXHqJ\/view?usp=sharing\">latest report and accounts<\/a> (at the foot of page 1) Wildlife Trusts Wales says, &#8220;WTW Council unanimously agreed that Wildlife Trust Wales should dissolve as a separate charity&#8221;, so why hasn&#8217;t it happened?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: georgia, palatino;\"><strong>Wildlife Trusts Wales has chosen to be the local branch of an English body and hopes we&#8217;ll generously view it as having a separate existence. A bit like the Green Party.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u25ca<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>OUT OF THE WOODWORK<\/p>\n<p>After casting in the direction of James Hitchcock I hooked a few fish.<\/p>\n<p>One specimen I dragged up from the murky depths was a Dr Paul Tubb. Opposing the takeover of our country regularly draws this response, but the takeover itself is just fine. Perhaps even a moral crusade.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I introduce that elevating consideration after being confronted by it in a document produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/woodknowledge.wales\">Woodknowledge Wales<\/a>. Here&#8217;s my interpretation of what it says.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>In addition to taking England&#8217;s wind turbines, and providing England&#8217;s water, Wales should also become England&#8217;s forest.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Farming is in the way of &#8220;re-forestation&#8221;.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>&#8220;Natural colonisation of land&#8221; (by flora and fauna) is not a &#8220;morally justifiable . . . option for Wales&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The claim that there is a moral dimension to this scam is self-deluding bullshit. These are grant-grabbing tree-planters, not theologians or moral philosophers.<\/p>\n<p>But enough of that, for I&#8217;ve been neglecting Tubby. He and I exchanged a bit more banter before it died a death.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on the Monday, I received an e-mail from a complete stranger. To Protic the Welsh language was the root cause of all Wales&#8217; problems.<\/p>\n<p>Protic was a ranter, and always good for a laugh. I often pictured him, crowned with a battered \u0161ajka\u010da, pounding furiously away on his laptop . . . never dreaming he had a fan in Dr Paul Tubb.<\/p>\n<p>Another irritating little git who popped up was a certain <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RobThomas14\">Rob Thomas<\/a>. A twitcher from Cardiff Met. His party piece was referring to me as &#8220;anonymous tweeter and conspiracy theorist &#8216;Jac'&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It got a bit boring after a while. So did he.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else who joined in was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ConforW\">a man with a beard, but no name<\/a>; he was simply the &#8220;Welsh manager&#8221; for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confor.org.uk\">Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) Ltd<\/a>, headquartered in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>And there were others.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it&#8217;s quite amazing &#8211; and worrying &#8211; how many &#8216;afforestation&#8217; groups there are out there. And how few of them, if any, are genuinely Welsh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>\u25ca<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>HOW MANY GROUPS DOES IT TAKE TO PLANT A TREE?<\/p>\n<p>One, very influential outfit, is the Woodland Trust, which seems to be involved in most wood-related scams. An English organisation that followed the time-honoured route of opening a branch within whispering distance of Corruption Bay and giving itself a Welsh name, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/about-us\/where-we-work\/wales\/\">Coed Cadw<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s simply a flag of convenience, for &#8216;Coed Cadw&#8217; doesn&#8217;t exist for Companies House, or the Charity Commission, or the Financial Conduct Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Another organisation I haven&#8217;t yet mentioned, but which has increasing influence over the &#8216;Welsh Government&#8217;, is the World Wildlife Fund. Which has an office and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/who-we-are\/wales\">a website<\/a> but, again, no existence independent of its UK \/ England HQ.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s a crew I may have neglected until now, <a href=\"https:\/\/waleslink.org\">Wales Environment Link<\/a> (WEL), which sees itself as an umbrella organisation for environmental groups.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45787\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45787\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45787\" src=\"https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter.png 722w, https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter-600x288.png 600w, https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter-350x168.png 350w, https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Conservation-Twitter-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to open enlarged in separate tab<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/register-of-charities.charitycommission.gov.uk\/charity-search\/-\/charity-details\/1022675\/trustees\">we look at the trustees<\/a> we find at the top of the list, Roger Thomas, who is also a trustee at <a href=\"https:\/\/tircoed.org.uk\">Tir Coed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/coed.cymru\/index.html\">Coed Cymru Cyf<\/a>. (Not to be confused with Coed Cadw, the Woodland Trust&#8217;s Welsh disguise.)<\/p>\n<p>Thomas is also a director at the Centre for Alternative Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Another trustee is Natalie Roxanne Buttriss. Who deserves special mention.<\/p>\n<p>Back in October 2018 she appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/jacothenorth.net\/blog\/the-welsh-clearances\/\">The Welsh Clearances.<\/a> She was then Wales Director of the Woodland Trust, which was a partner with Rewilding Britain in the Summit to Sea project, a very ambitious land grab that was derailed by colonialist arrogance rousing local resistance.<\/p>\n<p>I reproduce a photo from that post. It says so much. It shows Buttriss presenting a petition to Mike Hedges, Labour AM for Swansea East, I don&#8217;t know what post he held then. (Don&#8217;t care.)<\/p>\n<p>A petition demanding &#8211; what else? &#8211; more trees! But it only managed to get a miserable 2,385 signatures. Also, former Labour spad, <a href=\"https:\/\/waleslink.org\/our-team\/team-member-liz-smith\/\">Liz Smith.<\/a> Then there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/waleslink.org\/our-team\/team-member-rory-francis\/\">Rory Francis<\/a>, who too has worked as a spad, and more recently for Friends of the Earth and Coed Cadw \/ Woodland Trust.<\/p>\n<p>It really is revolving doors between &#8216;charities&#8217; and politics, with none of those involved having any experience of business, and a lifetime spent wholly reliant on public funds.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just identifiable organisations we should worry about; there are also loners, operating below the radar, who surface for other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>This was the case with Sharon Girardi and her beavers at Blaeneinion. She came to my attention only because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9757957\/Businesswoman-bans-holidaymakers-Covid-vaccine-eco-retreats.html\">her response to Covid made the news<\/a>. Powys, with less than 5% of Wales&#8217; population, had 60% of the country&#8217;s wildlife trusts. And post merger, still has 50%.<\/p>\n<p>How do we explain this? Being so large, and sparsely-populated, Powys obviously attracts the kind of people we&#8217;ve encountered in this article. But there may be other factors at work.<\/p>\n<p>A number of those I encountered in my research still live over the border, often just over the border.
