So here they are, each <span style=\"font-size: small;\">with<\/span> a brief comment. (Click on Tables to enlarge.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Although I&#8217;m concentrating on the Welsh figures you will find it rewarding to make comparisons with the figures for the English local authorities. Particularly those that show up the relative poverty of Wales; for example, the ownership of foreign holiday accommodation. The <span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>ables below can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/ons\/interactive\/census-map-1-3\/index.html\">Office for National Statistics website<\/a>, along with lots of other interesting information, and by clicking on an area you will get the exact figure.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The figures quoted by the ONS are <i><b>&#8220;per 1,000 of the LA&#8217;s usual residents&#8221;<\/b><\/i>. The first shows those liv<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ing<\/span> in <span style=\"font-size: small;\">a <\/span>local authority (LA) area <span style=\"font-size: small;\">with <\/span>a permanent address elsewhere. For Gwynedd the figure is 99. For Merthyr the figure is 16.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Students will account for some of this number, as will those working in these areas temporarily; maybe also other categories, such as those who have been placed in care homes but retain an address somewhere else. T<span style=\"font-size: small;\">hree <\/span>things worth remembering in relation to these figures: military personnel will not affect the Welsh figures;the areas of Wales with the highest findings did not have major construction projects in February 201<span style=\"font-size: small;\">1;<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> tourism jobs will have had very little influence <span style=\"font-size: small;\">on a census taken in Febr<span style=\"font-size: small;\">uary.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-91vRQEKFsfs\/UIWIgN-MXVI\/AAAAAAAAD0w\/28Lv4zOuVFA\/s1600\/census+3.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-91vRQEKFsfs\/UIWIgN-MXVI\/AAAAAAAAD0w\/28Lv4zOuVFA\/s320\/census+3.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\">table 2<\/span><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This second <span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>able is the one that I <span style=\"font-size: small;\">know many<\/span> readers will be interested in, as it shows the percentages of holiday homes. Predictably, the problem is most pronounced along the western seaboard, with Gwynedd the worst affected with a rating of 64. The figures for Merthyr and Caerffili are both zero!<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Obviously, there are few holiday homes in the Valleys, but as the population runs down and the region is tarted up holiday homes will <span style=\"font-size: small;\">appear<\/span>. Particularly along the Heads of the Valleys, already attractive due to the close proximity of the Brecon Beacons, and house prices being very low. The dualling of the A465 will bring this sub-region within two hours driving time of most English conurbations. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-M9Lg_xZfbKE\/UIV9Op5qXSI\/AAAAAAAADzI\/kCheQDUAWls\/s1600\/census+2.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-M9Lg_xZfbKE\/UIV9Op5qXSI\/AAAAAAAADzI\/kCheQDUAWls\/s320\/census+2.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\">table 3<\/span><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This third <span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>able links to some extent with Table 1, seeing as it shows those with a working address in one LA area and a home address in another. Though I suppose it also shows up again the &#8216;managed decline&#8217; of the Valleys. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> When we look at Powys and the west coast, this seems to suggest that when the census &#8216;snapshot&#8217; was taken in February last year there were quite a few working in these areas, presumably temporarily, but living elsewhere. Most, one can safely assume, in England<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">;<\/span> <\/span>which seems to be another example of locals losing out in employment. The figure for Pembrokeshire was 7, Neath Port Talbot 1.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ezWXkHjO1jI\/UIWPu6-5KVI\/AAAAAAAAD30\/bdA0bZ06DYg\/s1600\/census+4.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ezWXkHjO1jI\/UIWPu6-5KVI\/AAAAAAAAD30\/bdA0bZ06DYg\/s320\/census+4.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\">table 4<\/span><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The major influence on this <span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>able is students. For the LA with the highest percentage having an address elsewhere is Ceredigion, influenced by the universities at Aberystwyth and Lampeter. Gwynedd also shows a high figure, in the same bracket as Cardiff, with Swansea in the next lower bracket. That Rhondda Cynon Taf shows up is due to the University of Glamorgan (or whatever it&#8217;s now called) in Pontypridd. Comparative figures: Ceredigion 107, Swansea 47, Torfaen 12.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The high percentage of students in the population of Ceredigion is a reminder of how the student vote can &#8211; and has &#8211; influenced elections in this constituency. And is surely an argument for students to vote only where they live permanently.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-rFVpCUOGLMs\/UIWSI4Fa17I\/AAAAAAAAD38\/XG0kYojmdQk\/s1600\/census+5.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-rFVpCUOGLMs\/UIWSI4Fa17I\/AAAAAAAAD38\/XG0kYojmdQk\/s320\/census+5.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"192\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\">table 5<\/span><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Table 5 is another that doesn&#8217;t immediately set the pulses racing, but is nevertheless interesting. It shows those with a second address used for work. Predictably, the urban areas have the lower ratings, with the rural areas higher. Gwynedd again tops the Welsh chart but the figures are low. For example Gwynedd is 7 and Bridgend 4. In the case of Gwynedd, I can only attribute this to people living in Gwynedd having business premises or offices outside the county; in Llandudno, Newtown, Wrecsam, Aberystwyth and other places. I know people myself who fall into this category.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-l3LLQylTct8\/UIWU2710zwI\/AAAAAAAAD5k\/2Tcrg7LXaPM\/s1600\/census+6.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-l3LLQylTct8\/UIWU2710zwI\/AAAAAAAAD5k\/2Tcrg7LXaPM\/s320\/census+6.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\">table 6<\/span><\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Returning to holiday homes . . . this next <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Table<\/span> tells us where those people live who own holiday accommodation elsewhere in Englandandwales. It will be noted that <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yn<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ys<\/span><\/span> M\u00f4n, Pembrokeshire and Swansea come bottom of the Welsh listings, which would normally be taken as an indication of poverty. But Rhondda Cynon Taf has a higher rating than Wrecsam or Newport, so what&#8217;s going on here? In fact, RCT scores 5 while Monmouthshire scores only 4!<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> My interpretation . . . many Jacks have a chalet or caravan on Gower &#8211; in Swansea, the same might apply to a lesser degree in Pembs and YM; as for RCT, the call of the sea still draws Valleys&#8217; people to Trecco Bay and similar l<span style=\"font-size: small;\">oc<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ations <\/span><\/span>even <span style=\"font-size: small;\">though the mines are gone<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"text-align: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: left; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-fJtLBhS5zlM\/UIWigKuoQAI\/AAAAAAAAD7M\/QZWZ3dO27UU\/s1600\/census+7.PNG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-fJtLBhS5zlM\/UIWigKuoQAI\/AAAAAAAAD7M\/QZWZ3dO27UU\/s320\/census+7.PNG\" width=\"320\" height=\"188\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;\"><b>table 7<\/b><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The final <span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>able, 7, takes us to a gen<span style=\"font-size: small;\">uine (if unacknowledged) indicator of wealth<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, or otherwise, <span style=\"font-size: small;\">at an Engl<span style=\"font-size: small;\">andandwales level; for this tells us where we can find those ri<span style=\"font-size: small;\">c<\/span>h buggers with<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> holiday accommodation overseas. (No, not a <span style=\"font-size: small;\">20-year-old caravan <span style=\"font-size: small;\">in Amlwch!) In Wales<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the figures range from 1 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">(per 1,000) in Merthyr to 5 in the Vale of Glamorgan an<span style=\"font-size: small;\">d Monmouthshire. <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yet no matter how wealthy we may consider the Vale and eastern Gwent, they cannot compet<span style=\"font-size: small;\">e with those areas of Englan<span style=\"font-size: small;\">d shaded dark purple. <span style=\"font-size: small;\">It says something that the Englandandwales mean is 4<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, y<span style=\"font-size: small;\">et only 2 out of our 22 local authorities reach that level. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> And something else . .<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> .something the ONS will not tell us<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, but I&#8217;d bet my house on it. If we take Powys, Ceredigion, Denbighshire, Conwy, G<span style=\"font-size: small;\">wynedd and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Yn<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ys<\/span><\/span> M\u00f4n, then I guarantee that very few of t<span style=\"font-size: small;\">hose <span style=\"font-size: small;\">living in these areas <span style=\"font-size: small;\">owning <\/span>foreign property are <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Welsh<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If pressed on these figures I<span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8216;m sure most of our politicians, at all levels, would try to make a virtue of our poverty and turn <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the exploitation and colonisation of Wales in<span style=\"font-size: small;\">to a<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">parable <\/span><\/span>of selfless<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">concern for <\/span>one&#8217;s neighbour, t<span style=\"font-size: small;\">o <\/span>be held up as an example to all humanity . . .<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Bollocks! <span style=\"font-size: small;\">These figures show what all the other figures show &#8211; we are being shafted!<\/span> And the worst<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, the most damning figures, <\/span>are yet to come. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest release from the 2011 census findings covers those with more than one address.The Office for National Statistics has conveniently broken down the findings into seven Tables covering the different categories.
