Re. THE POVERTY PARTY (Alun Davies)

I know this guy. He originally hails from Tredegar (so he's got as close to a Welsh hill farmer, and knows less about them and their farming difficulties than an average goat herder from Outer Mongolia). Anyway, he went to university in Aberystwyth. Guess what he studied? Yep - POLITICS, so a career politician in the making.

As Aber uni. is a hotbed for young up and coming Welsh middle class "crachach" - the more successful ones (like Rhodri Williams - two term chair of the old Welsh Language Board - appointed by Jenny [Randy] Randerson) go on to "greater" things within the Taffia circles, and do their best to forget their CYIG involvement whilst young and impressionable at uni. Williams I believe was chair of CYIG during his student stint in Aber. Alun Davies was elected President of National Union of Students Wales whilst he was there, and of course was very pally at the time with the CYIG gang. The remainder of the drop-outs from uni - if they're not too pushy, or have lower career target levels - stay in Aber and continue with Cymdeithas (and as Plaid foot soldiers) and become proud NGO paupers for the duration, this means that they do not have to hide their past shady student activities..

Alun Davies, fresh from uni. and spying bright political horizons, decided that his involvement with CYIG & the "Nashies" could really hinder his chances of becoming elected. So he utilised the old technique of jumping ship and landing on the deck of the good ship "Welsh" LABOUR. Carwyn Jones I understand followed a similar route before him. Says a lot really!

So, as a cabbage on a stick called Labour will get elected almost anywhere in the valleys - up pops our hero. As a "Labour Co-operative" Party candidate (spot the difference? OK you'd be excused if you couldn't, so like everyone else we'll call him "Labour" but it's worth looking up what it means to be a "Labour Co-operative" member: http://www.party.coop/ - spot the windmills in the banner when you get there).

So finally he achieves his goal - In July 2009 he was selected to fight his home seat of Blaenau Gwent at the next Assembly elections; he won the seat with a majority of 9,120 over the Independent candidate.

On May 13, 2011 a beaming Alun was appointed Labour’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and European Programmes in the Welsh Government. Big title! For someone who knows next to F*** All about the subject!

Mind you, he has been around a bit. Originally a supporter of Plaid Cymru he stood as a Plaid-Green Alliance candidate (not a big surprise there - he seems to go in for these "alliances") for the Blaenau Gwent parliamentary seat in 1992 and as a Plaid candidate for Cynon Valley in 1997. Then the penny dropped "I'm not getting anywhere fast here" he was heard muttering to himself - so he moved to the Labour Party and was Labour's candidate in Ceredigion at the 2005 general election. He was chosen as first on the Labour Party list for 'top-up' seats from the Mid and West Wales region for the 2007 Assembly election, and because of Labour losses in the region the party secured two seats.
