Is there any reporting about exploitation of single women in North Wales? Just thinking if abuse of kids in care homes was helped by Social Services & MH services, same could apply to adults. Feel I had a lucky escape a few years ago but lots amiss in the system from what I could see. Pathway into exploitation for sure.

Those poor children, the survivors of whom deserve justice, we also need to know, that this level of sordid corruption, is not operating still.

I was wondering why the BBC and Labour controlled Cardiff Council are involved in the ‘Flatholm stunt’ off the Cardiff coast in October by installing the temporary roll-up solar panel unit. This unit was launched in 2015 and has been flailing around for a non-military application since them. The product is designed to be used in hot sunny deserts with General Sir Mike Jackson GCB CBE on its advisory board.

I wonder if it’s anything to do with the controversy that’s just erupted on plans agreed by the UK and Wales governments to allow the dumping on nuclear contaminated mud from Hinckley nuclear power station at Cardiff grounds, a sandbank within spitting distance of Flatholm off the Cardiff coast? Nice bit of green wash from the generals to divert attention. The island has had a fully functional fixed PV array and 6Kw wind turbine since 2007!!

Well-summarised, it is an absolute mess. The result is a criminal justice system which undoubtedly imprisons people who are poor and vulnerable – there would seem to be a far grater correlation between those characteristics and imprisonment than criminality and imprisonment.

I very much appreciate that you’ve mentioned that the CPS will mount cases in the absence of any forensic evidence at all – a lot of people don’t realise this. The real killer for a defendant in such trials is if the opinion of a ‘expert psychiatrist’ maintains that the defendant ‘has the profile’ of the putative offender. In such cases the defendant has had it, they will go to prison. Two such examples were the convictions of Michael Stone and Howard Hughes.

No forensic evidence against either of them, both declared by psychiatrists to be the ‘one who did it’ and because the crimes for which they were convicted were so horrible they have both been in prison for years and will almost certainly stay there a lot longer before the Court of Appeal even dares admit that a terrible miscarriage of justice may have happened.

The case of the Birmingham Six was bad enough, in which forensic evidence was simply fabricated. But in the cases of Stone and Hughes, no-one even pretended that there was any evidence against them. They might as well have been found guilty for having eyes too close together or looking at the judge in a funny way.

Amazing discipline psychiatry. Someone found out that a bunch of psychiatrists have been up to terrible things? Then wait until they are arrested for a crime with which they have no connection and just give your expert opinion that they done it…

If anyone finds this hard to believe, take a look at the case of Howard Hughes, convicted of the rape and murder of 7 yr old Sophie Hook in Llandudno back in the 90s. Hughes had learning disabilities, was illiterate and had a chromosomal abnormality which caused excessive growth (he was huge, I think getting on for 7 ft). So he looked frightening.

As a teenager Hughes had been in Bryn Estyn where he claimed to have been abused. As a young man he had been in Garth Angharad, an establishment in Arthog nr Dolgellau, which was termed a ‘hospital for abnormal mentally ill criminals’. It was not a hospital, it was not even run by the NHS, it was a building owned by Paul Hett, a struck off solicitor who featured in the Waterhouse Report because he also owned ‘residential schools’ in which children were abused. People who’d grown up in children’s homes in north Wales who claimed to have been abused whilst in care often found themselves in Garth Angharad. I have documentary evidence that one of the psychiatrists involved with this ‘hospital’, Chris Hunter, felt able to declare people he had never met as ‘dangerous’ on the basis of ‘evidence’ presented by doctors and social workers whom he knew were lying – and whom he knew had been the subject of complaint by the people that they were lying about.

After Sophie Hook was found dead, the police seemed to have a good idea of the man that they wanted to eventually charge. The detective in charge of the hunt gave a public statement which explained that they were looking for a ‘brute’, a big brute at that. They arrested Hughes a few hours later. They had to let him go again because they had no evidence that he had anything to do with Sophie’s death, but a police raid on his house later that day most conveniently found child pornography and he was re-arrested.

No forensic evidence connecting Hughes to Sophie was ever found. A convicted paedophile whom Hughes was in prison on remand with claimed that Hughes confessed to raping and murdering Sophie. This man’s account of Hughes’s alleged confession sounds remarkably like the fantasy of a paedophile. Hughes has never admitted to killing Sophie. He remains in prison and is one of the very small number of prisoners whom David Blunkett placed on (I think) a 50 yr tariff before parole can even be considered.

After it was admitted that a paedophile ring operated in Bryn Estyn, Hughes tried to claim compensation for the abuse that he claimed to have suffered there. His claim was blown out within days and the fact that he made the claim was taken as yet more evidence of how terrible he was.

If anyone abusing kids in Bryn Estyn and then banging them up in Garth Angharad when they told people about it wanted to ensure that whatever story Howard Hughes had to tell was never heard, they found a very effective way of doing it.

If I remember rightly, Gerard Elias QC who acted as advisor to the Waterhouse Inquiry which concealed the extent of the paedophile ring which operated in north Wales, was also involved in Hughes’s trial – I think he was prosecuting counsel…

A crucial failing in the criminal justice system in Wales is that we have the English system imposed upon us. This leads to miscarriages. As your specialty has identified, it’s possible to obtain false confessions either from suspects of a low mental acuity usually trawled from a record of less serious offences, or by ‘prison cell eavesdrop evidence’ from those of a similar bent. CPS will prosecute even without corroborative forensics. In Scotland, the procurator fiscal can assemble such a case for the crown in the knowledge that the court can find a ‘not proven’ verdict. So in Scotland if subsequent evidence emerges, the case can be re-visited. The classic example is advances in DNA profiling in cases of murder and rape. As Wales is now to be a penal colony designed to be a warehouse for the English criminal, access to justice for native Welsh suspects becomes more distant. Especially for the mentally challenged. In my point about remand, it means increased use of video link testimony from far off super-prisons, elongated recall requirements of witnesses due to case delays, and of course, additional logistical strain for the police. The result is innocent Welsh people wrongly convicted, with the real offenders continue their criminal episode, victim trauma being extended , while our police forces are run off their feet chasing the consequences of social dumping and the prison estate consisting of motelgrandes for English imports.
