that KindaVillage "community" has rural colonist written all over it. 80 acres of 1st class farmland now turned over to some good lifers with a stack of money. Make no mistake you need serious money to buy that kind of place these days, that's why local people can't get into farming on a decent scale - priced out by incoming Anglos who've cashed up in the pricier parts of England or have access to capital beyond natives' reach .

I was thinking of the apocryphal tale of the Welsh Labour council debating buying a couple of gondolas for the local lake. Pipes up Dai Sledge at the back, <em>'Tidy, mun, but who's gonna feed 'em'?'</em>

Don't be too worried about that. If the Sais succeed in turning large swathes of Wales into "outdoor activity zones" then some bright spark will promote the idea of introducing elephants to add to the "diversity offering" with some exotic environmental theory to justify it. Enough to make you reach for that gun.

I disagree with your tweet re. research into use of elephant grass as a raw material for building products. This type of application could be a contributor to improvements, one of many, certainly NOT a major part as the stuff would need to be grown in large quantities fairly close to market. I would suggest that Aber Uni should partner with an organisation that might be interested in promoting a range of practical solutions rather than a self-centred preachy outfit like C.A.T

'Wales is just perfect for...others they want to get rid of'

Between 1989-91 I worked as a biomedical researcher in St George's Hospital Medical School, London. It was made very clear that I was nothing but a Welsh sheepshagger, but then the whole institution was shot through with dreadful snobbery and racism, as well as serious corruption. The bunch of pompous self-styled Top Doctors that I worked with openly joked about sending the really bad doctors to Wales. At first I thought that these comments were yet another dig at me for daring to be a graduate of a Welsh university. I then realised that they were deadly serious and I even watched the process in action.

They had a gynaecologist working there who was incredibly difficult and who was endlessly sexually harassing the female staff - quite serious sexual harassment as well, cornering young overseas cleaners and groping them etc. This man's high point was having sex with a colleague of mine in one of the research laboratories during work hours (or should I say the high point that I actually knew about). He fell out with everyone and failed his professional exams. They did indeed send him to Wales. He was frozen out of the London circle and he now works as a Consultant in Cardiff and Vale Health Board. He has a private practice at Cardiff Spire Hospital and is a leading light in Cardiff Bay Yacht Club. His patients have no idea at all of his past. I doubt that he has changed in nature and I dread to think of the misconduct on his part that is probably being concealed by Cardiff and Vale.

When I lived in north Wales, again and again I heard friends and neighbours comment on the poor quality of some doctors in Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. I knew the histories of some of these doctors - like the man whom I knew at St Georges, they had been frozen out of other regions as a result of very bad behaviour and 'sent to Wales'. There are doctors who would like to come and practice in Wales, but they are being deterred because they know how poor some of their colleagues that they will be obliged to work with are. Good doctors don't want to work with unsafe colleagues who abuse patients and have been kicked out of other places.

Wales is being used as a dumping ground by the medical establishment. What really pissed me off at St Georges was that although they knew this, they would then point a finger at Wales and tell me how crap it all was there. Furthermore, things weren't that brilliant at St Georges - I witnessed some very serious wrongdoing which was concealed. Just before I went to work there, their Professor of Paediatrics was jailed for child porn offences. The London hospitals get away with shocking behaviour as a result of their celebrity patients, often with media connections, so their reputations remain intact. When I was at St Georges one private patient of the Prof of our dept was one of the most high profile BBC stars of light entertainment, a really famous name. She had no idea of the malpractice happening in the dept run by her doctor, but I have no doubt that this lady's influence in the media and her open praising of the Prof in newspaper interviews helped St Georges maintain a reputation that it did not deserve.

Another very big name on the BBC also knew about the sexually harassing gynaecologist who was dumped in Cardiff. That was Lord Robert Winston, the media friendly doc with the moustache, star of TV series like Child In Time, the ethical face of fertility treatment. The sexual harasser worked for Winston at Hammersmith before he worked at St Georges. Winston will have known what he was like and as ever in medicine, he didn't deal with him, he just passed him on to someone else. Who then passed him on to Wales. Winston was a Westminster Gov't health advisor.

Is it surprising that there are problems in the Welsh NHS?

By the way Jac, Dafis and all the regular correspondents - have you noticed how keen the Westminster Gov't are on locating new prisons in Wales? The biggest prison in Europe came to Wrexham and now there's talk of another one at Port Talbot. Would the residents of Richmond-Upon-Thames accept a Titan prison on their doorsteps? Research from the US showed that socio-economically politically powerless regions accepted prisons on the grounds that they'd 'provide jobs' and 'boost the economy'. They don't - no-one wants to live near a prison and businesses move away as well. In the US there are towns where there is bugger all but a massive prison that has killed of whatever was there previously. Wrexham was conned into believing that prison would help revive their town - MPs like David Hanson lied to the constituents. I note that Port Talbot is fighting back - for their sake I hope they win. If the Westminster Gov't want to embark on a massive prison building programme to incarcerate people who are chaotic, can't cope and have mental health problems and drug problems rather than treating them, someone needs to ensure that those prisons are built in the constituencies of Tory Ministers.

Llais y Sais is very vague about that Christopher Wood. I suspect that he based himself at Tregaron while working in Solihull, lodging for a few nights in the week. Like many Sais he probably thought Tregaron was right out in the wilds and he could bring kids there for hanky panky on weekends, half term etc. Amazing that all these pervs think Wales is a good place to set up shop.
