From the Annual Report: "NESO is an independent public corporation, wholly owned by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero". It's politically controlled. If politicians decide to rush for AI data centers, then NESO will fall into line whether the system can cope or not.

Something else I found: "We take a whole system view so that everyone in Great Britain has access to secure, clean and affordable energy". Yeah, affordable.

And I noticed the constant reference to 'Great Britain'. Which obviously doesn't include the north of Ireland. Where - and you won't believe this! - prices are much cheaper because consumers there are linked to an All-Ireland system.

I don’t know of any that have been approved yet, but the Holyhead one is having the substation rebuilt even though the campus only has outline permission. The grid connection was revamped some years ago in anticipation of something happening there. Not sure what the capacity is now, it used to be 300 MW but could be far higher now

The Amlwch one is very tiny and hardly matters

At Caernarfon the grid connection is being currently assessed by NESO. It will almost certainly be a dedicated connection from the transmission substation (450MW) at Pentir

No one gets to connect to the grid unless NESO sign off the connection agreement having assessed that the grid is capable

I’d be far more concerned about emergency response for BESS incidents than DCs using electricity, and it’s the LPAs who assess that

I didn't touch earlier on the gruesome labour practices adopted by companies that are often owned or backed by international corporates. That factor alone should serve as a prompt to adopt more thorough enforcement of contract terms aimed at disqualification of offenders. I fear that the default out of sight out of mind posture is the preferred and easiest option for most of the 96 recently installed in Y Senedd

Serious questions need to be asked to Plaid Cymru Wales Government, and particular to its Energy Minister Adam Price, about power supply to our local essential heavy industry. A few example figures below – calculated on the back of a cigarette packet – reveal interesting energy figures.

The proposed new electric arc furnace (EAF) at Port Talbot steelworks involves two new grid input connections. This is for “connections” but it does not explain the “source” of all that green electric power.

It is believed the total combined electricity requirement for Port Talbot plus Trostre varies from 1.3-2.2 TWH per year, which is an equivalent continuous load of 150-250 MW average with peaks of 300-500 MW system capacity required, which is a similar magnitude to a small city itself.

The proposed Margam Connection Project will see the expansion of the existing Margam site with a new 275kv gas-insulated substation (GIS), details of which will soon be published. Plans for a second 275kv GIS on the Tata Steel site, and an underground cable connecting the two substations, were part of a separate planning process. The project is a key step in enabling green steel production at Port Talbot and in supporting local jobs and the regional economy, while also providing capacity for future energy connections in the region.

A single large typical modern onshore wind turbine (2-3MW capacity) produces more than six million kWh of variable electricity annually.

A typical electric arc furnace consumes about 600kWh to melt one tonne of scrap to produce a tonne of steel. The Trostre tinplate works alone produces about half a million tonnes of tinplate a year. Tinplate is basically steel covered very, very thinly in tin. Quality steel, as used at Trostre, is traditionally from the Port Talbot hot mill which itself is to be fed from the new electric arc furnace.

So the steel plate at Trostre alone will need 300,000,000kwh divided by 6,000,000kwh, which means the equivalent total output from 50 typical modern very large wind turbines. Problem is, wind power is variable, as erratic as the wind itself, and batteries will never power a steel industry.

This is just for the smelting alone, essentially using renewable energy for “green” steel, not counting all the other massive incredible uses of electricity within Port Talbot and Trostre to drive all huge electric mill motors and pumps and everything else in both plants, let alone storage for times when there is no wind. That’s 50 giant wind turbines to power just one single unit with a monster battery storage when the wind is not blowing.

Please prove me wrong, as I really do want the Wales steel and tinplate industry to thrive and survive the onslaught of the net zero targets of most political parties. What the real answer could be is a small modular nuclear power station near the steelworks itself, built into the hillside behind to avoid any disaster like the tsunami tidal wave that raced up the South Wales coast disastrously in 1607. If the Royal Navy can power ships and submarines using nuclear power, surely the steelworks could use modular nuclear green power.

I hope all the newly elected Senedd Members will take this issue seriously and not rely on the “green” mantra.
