I’d say considering the tide of prevailing Anglo-American hegemony, we’re doing damned fine culturally. In the age of the internet and globalism, that isn’t going to disappear any time soon. Ireland has been independent for over 100 years and even with geographical distance being in their favour also, more people speak Welsh than Irish. What independence can do, is grow our economy on our terms, no longer shackled to a state with an enormously inflated sense of its own self-importance on the world stage due to imperialistic hangover.

That’s true but I don’t really see the point of independence if it’s on a civic nationalist platform. It needs to be on a platform of cultural defense otherwise it wouldn’t make much of a difference to Wales. However, I can see how using civic nationalism as a platform to win over doubters can set the conditions for a cultural revival

Croeso. I think the key is to remember that most people aren’t screaming Rule Britannia unionists. My father is a proud Welshman (and his father was from London) and he’s open to independence if it benefits financially. He thinks Cardiff would be another London, which is a fair argument.

I think he’s an archetypal example of your ‘average’ Welsh person really. Remember that 2/3rds of all people in Scotland identify as Scottish only, which is a thick majority that vastly surpasses the vote for independence. The arguments will always be won and lost on the economics and not identity.

My role was minor, but I was there, and I knew most of the main players. Even those I didn’t know in the ’60s, like John Jenkins, I got to know in later years.

Another unrelated comment but I think I and many others would love a book from you recounting your days in the height of the nationalist movement.
